Financial Advisor Development Program, Vanguard
Chapter: Greater Phoenix
An FPA Financial Planning Challenge winner, Jacob Gurock is using his passion for financial planning to get involved in his new local chapter and help provide access to financial services to all.
2019 is going to be my year! I’m a recent graduate of Texas Tech University's Personal Financial Planning program (Guns Up!) and am now working as a teaching assistant for Dr. Sarah Asebedo's communication and counseling course. I’ve also taken on a mentorship role with financial planning students at TTU. As a previous student ambassador to Tech's Personal Financial Planning department, I had the opportunity to serve as a liaison between the students and faculty. Now I can serve as an aide in helping students secure internships and jobs.
In June, I will make the trip to Scottsdale, Arizona, to start my career in Vanguard's Financial Advisor Development Program. I can't wait to help assist Vanguard's financial advisors in creating sound financial plans, uniquely catered to each client. In my first few months at Vanguard, I will start studying for the CFP® exam and by the end of 2019, I will assist clients in meeting their goals and living life on their terms. I can't think of a more exciting role!
I also plan on making a difference in my new local chapter, FPA of Greater Phoenix. I would love to help establish pro bono events throughout the year so people who can't afford financial planning services have access to us. I believe this will have a high impact on my community, and it will foster a new perspective on the financial planning industry as a whole.
FPA has been so supportive of me from day one. I had the opportunity to attend two FPA Annual Conferences, network with professionals and garner a handful of mentors along the way. This past annual conference in Chicago was particularly special. I had the opportunity to compete alongside two of my teammates in the Financial Planning Challenge—and we won! On top of that, I received an offer from Vanguard at a networking reception! I can honestly say that FPA has been immensely helpful in jumpstarting my career. So, in 2019, I plan on giving back to the association that has given so much to me.
